The glacier erodes away the soft rock by abrasion, leaving a hollow. Post-glaciation, meltwater fills this hollow, creating a long, narrow lake - a ribbon lake e.g. Windermere. The lake may be dammed by moraines left at the glacier snout and sides. The two main processes that lead to glacial erosion are plucking and abrasion.
When a large amount of plucking has occurred this increases the rate of abrasion as more rock is embedded in the base of the glacier. At the top end of the glacier, the ice doesn’t move in a straight line — it moves in a circular motion called rotational slip.
